Die NWU Loopbaan sentrum

BEGIN BEPLAN AAN JOU LOOPBAAN – REEDS AS EERSTEJAAR

The NWU Career Centre

START PLANNING YOUR CAREER – AS FIRST-YEAR ALREADY

You have just completed you school career. A thousand things run through your mind: Your last school holiday; student life that awaits you; freedom; independence; exploring a bigger and wider world full of new opportunities and challenges; the list goes on and on . . .

And now you may well ask, “Should I really be thinking of my career already?”

To that the NWU PUK Career Centre will respond with an unapologetic “Yes!”, because the reality is that one doesn’t just get a job overnight. One must prepare for that job, and that preparation takes time.

When the Career Centre encourages a balanced student life (involvement with a wide variety of student activities on campus), it is not for the sake of another inscription on your curriculum vitae (CV), but rather to facilitate life-changing experiences for you. Should one introduce the same attitude to your academic life, the career-minded student will not study to pass exams alone, but rather to get equipped for his/her career later in life. The Career Centre wants to assist in this paradigm shift among students.

Although the Career Centre does not advise students on which fields of study or subjects to consider, their staff do shed valuable light on the career possibilities associated with the student’s subject choices. The Centre also identifies career possibilities and communicates that to students.

With their successful Career Fair in May each year, the Centre introduces students to representatives of big companies. Many students have met their future employers at this Fair. Prospective First-year student, the reality is that you will be applying for your first job in 3 to 5 years’ time – which is why it is a good idea to pay the Career Centre a visit during your first year already and discover how they can empower you. The Centre teaches students to compile a good CV, how to evaluate the advertisements of vacant positions, and how to properly prepare for the subsequent job interview.

The Career Centre is located in Building F25 in Jooste Street (at the rotating gate on Steve Biko Avenue). They may be contacted on (018) 299 2058 or visit their website at http://www.nwu.ac.za/career-centre
